Sashi-tōshi Hishaku

'Sashi-tōshi' hishaku are used for formal tea offerings.

The handle of the hishaku passes through (sashi-tōshi) one side of the cup and fixes into the wall of the opposite side. They require incredibly skilled, intricate work and are very durable as opposed to the standard kenyō, brazier or hearth hishaku that have the handle inserted into a slit in the cup.

Sashi-tōshi hishaku are used for the daisu and naga-ita temae in some schools.

Hanshi paper

Hanshi paper is used across the board in an Ueda Ryū chaji. It is used for for kaishi (sweet) paper, kaichū (general supply) paper, koicha bowl cleaning paper, and variously during kaiseki.

 

This is a box of 500 sheets of 'shira-sagi' (white herring) hanshi-sized paper.
