"Murakami Pirates Tea" Organic Tochū Powder
Touchū, Eucommia Ulmoides, (Du Zhong in Traditional Chinese Medicine), is indigenous to central China, and since 1987 it has been grown on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima Prefecture..
The Seto Inland Sea was a major route for transportation and cultural diffusion in ancient times, from the 14th century till the end of the Edo period it was ruled by the Murakami Pirates. Instead of performing theft as may be assumed, the pirates were more akin to a naval force offering righteous assistance in navigation and security. It is now known as the best region to grow tochūcha outside of China and many say the farming practices and terrior are superior to those of its homeland.
Touchūcha has some similar health giving properties to matcha, being full of flavonoids it is an antioxidant and neuroprotective. However it has no bitterness and is entirely free of caffeine, making it the perfect substitute for late night keiko, for children and others sensitive to stimulants.
Touchūcha has an unusual mild sweetness, earthy flavour and a faint comforting fragrance. Due to the trees bathing in sea breezes all year round, this Tochūcha has a distinct flavour from Du Zhong grown in its homeland.
